Introduction

Recently Microsoft sent Vista to manufacturing.  So I'm sure you want to know how to synchronize your Windows Mobile device with Vista.  Well Microsoft decided to migrate from ActiveSync to the new Windows Mobile Device Center (WMDC).  This article is based on WMDC Beta 3 which only supports Vista RC1.  However I successfully installed WMDC on the RTM version of Windows Vista Ultimate Edition for x86.

By default I did not have to customize the firewall in Windows Vista.  However if you are using another vendor's firewall you will need the following settings: (This is required for OneCare Beta 1.5 and 2.0. See Windows Mobile Device Center - OneCare Firewall Configuration)

TCP/IP Ports, Protocols and Direction

WMDC uses the following ports:

Port Protocol Direction
990 TCP Inbound
999 TCP Inbound
5678 TCP Inbound
5679 UDP Outbound
5721 TCP Inbound
26675 TCP Inbound

Programs

WMDC uses the following programs to communicate via TCP/IP:

C:\Windows\WindowsMobile\wmdHost.exe

For OneCare users see Windows Mobile Device Center - OneCare Firewall Configuration
