By Chris De Herrera, Copyright 2000, 2002-2003
 Version 1.02  Revised 12/16/2003

Introduction

This procedure explains how to remove ActiveSync 3.0, 3.1, 3.5, 3.6, 3.7 or 3.7.1 by hand.  Before trying this procedure, I recommend using the Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel.  If that function fails, this procedure will remove ActiveSync components.

This procedure is not endorsed or supported by Microsoft!

Steps to Remove ActiveSync

1. ActiveSync Icon - If the ActiveSync  icon is on the desktop, delete the ActiveSync icon from the desktop.

2. Microsoft ActiveSync Directory - Find the "Microsoft ActiveSync" directory on the PC and rename or remove it.  Just search for the file wcescomm.exe and you will find the directory.  The default directory for a fresh installation is \Programs\Microsoft ActiveSync\.  The default directory is \Programs\Windows CE Services\ if you upgraded from Windows CE Services..  If you delete this directory, all programs, backups and AvantGo information for your PC Companions will be deleted as well.

3. Editing the Registry - The keys listed below need to be removed.  You can do this by running RegEdit.

  1. HKey_Current_User\Software\Microsoft\Windows CE Services
  2. HKey_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Uninstall\Windows CE Services
  3. HKey_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows CE Services
  4. HKey_Users\Default\Software\Microsoft\Windows CE Services - This entry will not exist if all the above keys have been removed.

4. My Documents Directory - You may choose to delete the [Device Name] My Documents subdirectory from \My Documents as well.  This removes all files you were synchronizing to your PC Companion.

5. Reboot the computer and reinstall ActiveSync to the PC.   The "Get Connected" dialog may appear. Simply choose cancel and proceed with reinstallation of ActiveSync
