Introduction

Here is a list of bugs that people have reported with their Compaq iPAQ and Aero Pocket PCs.  Whenever possible, I will list how the problem has been resolved.   This page does not address hardware issues where components fail due to mishandling.  Submit your bugs to Chris@Pocket PC FAQ and I will add them here.

This bug list does not represent the views of Microsoft or the hardware manufacturers to identify or resolve issues with their products. The issues listed here may or may not be addressed by Microsoft and/or the hardware manufacturers as they see fit. All items listed are based on reports from users which may or may not be accurate.

Date Added Device Problem Description Resolution

Compaq

1/23/01 iPAQ Pocket PC Sometimes pressing a direction on the cursor pad will cause it to stick.  Not physically, though.  Even though you've let up on the cursor, whatever program you're in keeps scrolling. This has been fixed in rom upgrade 1.69 from Compaq.
12/5/00 iPAQ Pocket PC On the bottom of the unit there are 1/16" crack where the case does not mesh fully. I was able to stick my fingernail in it. This occurs on some units and appears to be related to the molding of the case.  The usability is not compromised however they are designed to mesh completely together.
12/5/00 iPAQ Pocket PC Basic sleeve scratches the front of the iPAQ. The original basic sleeve scratches the front of the iPAQ.  Later versions do not.
11/30/00 iPAQ Pocket PC Transcriber on the ActiveSync CD does not work with the iPAQ Pocket PC Instald Transcriber from Microsoft's website which includes support for the iPAQ Pocket PC.
11/29/00 iPAQ Pocket PC Stylus gets stuck if you insert it 180 degrees off.  Do not push too hard or the stylus will be difficult to remove Gently remove the stylus and turn it 180 degrees.  Then reinsert it.
11/29/00 iPAQ Pocket PC Stylus no longer ejects Contact Tech Support.  The eject mechanism may be inoperative or the stylus may be inserted incorrectly and jammed.
11/20/00 Aero 1550 Loud hissing noise when using Media Player and Audible. Noise is of constant volume and is constantly heard when Media Player or Audible are running even when device's volume is turned all the way down. Open Issue
11/20/00 iPAQ Pocket PC Headphone jack is cross wired so that sound from the left channel is played in the right ear, and vice versa. This issue is believed to be fixed in the latest iPAQ Pocket PCs.
11/20/00 iPAQ Pocket PC Recently the screen in the writing area had become increasingly inaccurate and when I touch the screen there the iPAQ believes that I'm actually touching 1-2 inches to the upper right of that point. Try recalibrating the screen - start - settings - system - align screen.  If this does not work then contact Tech Support for repair
11/20/00 iPAQ Pocket PC The voice recorder captures heavy static and voice faintly in the background. This originally worked fine. I have gone into Start/ Notes /Tools /Options /Global Input Options and have tried each of the voice recording formats but have had no luck. I have even done a soft and hard reset, but still no luck. Also, turning on and off the Automatic Gain Control does not address this issue. Open issue
11/9/00 iPAQ Pocket PC Power button slips inside the unit so it is no longer visible in the hole. Contact Tech Support for repair
11/9/00 iPAQ Pocket PC Some CompactFlash jackets do not work when the iPAQ is inserted.  Contact Tech Support for replacement jacket.   The iPAQ is not meshing with all the pins on the bottom connector when you insert it in the CompactFlash Jacket. Some users have temporarily been able to make these jackets work by pressing on the side of the iPAQ where the stylus is located when it is inside the jacket
11/4/00 iPAQ Pocket PC Sounds played at the wrong speed. It sounded like a 33 1/3 rpm record being played at 77 rpm. If I did a Hard Reset then it would play real slow, it would take about 10 seconds for it to play 1 second of music. It alternated between these two settings. Contact Tech Support for repair
11/4/00 iPAQ Pocket PC Indication of unavailability of memory, when trying to edit a contact. The iPAQ actually takes in the edit and then closes Contacts. The contact is saved so no data is lost.  Open Issue
10/31/00 iPAQ Pocket PC Crackling sound in speakers and headphones while using Phone Tone - Sent By Albino Castro Open Issue
10/31/00 iPAQ Pocket PC No sound from speaker, headphone jack OK; may result from extensive use of built-in headphone jack, or leaving connector plugged in for long periods of time. the contacts that turn ON/OFF the internal speaker stop working properly. Contact Tech Support for repair. Some users have resolved this problem by removing and reinserting the headphone jack multiple times.
10/31/00 iPAQ Pocket PC When using Character Recognizer in the middle box, a weird line sometimes shoots down and distorts the letter I am trying to write (usually and a or an e). The letter then appears as something else (usually and f or a t) due to this distortion. Open Issue
10/29/00 iPAQ Pocket PC Dust/Hairs under screen Contact Tech Support and ask for replacement.  This has been done in France successfully.  The problem is that the gasket between the touch screen and the display is missing on the top and bottom.  Soee users are using a hair to fish out the dust a particle at a time. Compaq now offers repair service which includes installing a rubber seal.
10/29/00 iPAQ Pocket PC Reset Switch Cover does not stay closed Some users have used a screwdriver to tweak the rails so it will stay closed.  Others have used some foam to keep it closed.  Contact Compaq Tech Support as well.
10/29/00 iPAQ Pocket PC Intermittent ability to connect via USB See Pocket PC USB Connection Issues - Insights, Procedures & Tips from Microsoft
10/29/00 iPAQ Pocket PC Can not press up/down/left/right buttons at the same time. Compaq has confirmed this issue. They are unable to fix the problem since it is in the hardware.  This affects the ability to use the iPAQ in some games. See Jimmysoftware's discussion about the details of this problem.
10/29/00 iPAQ Pocket PC Image on the screen is mirrored Contact Compaq for  a replacement unit.
10/29/00 iPAQ Pocket PC Ability to connect only once using Infrared to a cell phone. Second connection usually does not work. Requires reset of iPAQ to connect again
10/29/00 iPAQ Pocket PC Can not charge the iPAQ right out of the box.  The unit works fine when attached to the AC Adapter but quits when disconnected. Contact Compaq Support for a replacement unit.  The battery is faulty.

Submit your bugs to Chris@Pocket PC FAQ and I will add them here.  Include the device you are using and the steps that you took to confirm the issue. Please indicate whether or not I may publish your name as the submitter of the problem.
