ActiveSync Troubleshooting Guide
By Chris De Herrera, Copyright 2001-2003
Version 1.34 Revised 8/18/2003
Troubleshooting/Tips
Before starting, please upgrade to
ActiveSync 3.5 for
all Windows CE 2.x or 3.x PC Companions. If you have a SmartPhone then
install ActiveSync 3.6. (3.6 adds no
additional features for the Pocket PC) or
ActiveSync 3.7. This release resolves some of the problems listed
below. The readme file included with ActiveSync describes the fixes that
are provided which include daylight savings time problems, synchronization
of notes in contacts, support for Outlook 98, Windows 2000, Windows XP etc.

Installation:
-
Before installing or upgrading ActiveSync, make sure
you remove your Pocket PC from the cradle or disconnect the sync cable.
You cannot be synchronizing while you install or upgrade ActiveSync.
-
If you have a Handheld PC 1.0 (Windows CE 1.0) it is
not compatible with ActiveSync. You must install H/PC Explorer 1.1.
-
If you have Windows 95, you can only install ActiveSync
3.1. ActiveSync 3.5 or later is incompatible with Windows 95.
There is no support for the Pocket PC 2002 or Windows Mobile 2003 with
ActiveSync 3.1.
-
If you are attempting to install ActiveSync on a
Windows NT, Windows 2000 or Windows 2003 server, this is not supported.
-
If you cannot uninstall ActiveSync using Add/Remove
Programs, consider hand uninstalling it. See
Removing ActiveSync 3.X
for details on how to uninstall it.
-
If you cannot install ActiveSync with Windows XP, you
may want to try
this solution that one user paid Microsoft for.
-
If you see an error "_ins5576" then there is a conflict
with another program on your PC. You can resolve it by following the
instructions for
Microsoft KB Article 299393.
-
If you have Windows 98 and see the error "TCP/IP
Protocol Required The TCP/IP Protocol must be installed on this computer
before Microsoft ActiveSync can be installed.
Click OK to quit Setup. Then, open Control Panel, double-click Network,
and install the protocol." then you need to follow the instructions listed
in Microsoft's KB Article
299409.
-
If you have installed Replay Radio, you may not be able
to install/reinstall/upgrade ActiveSync. Uninstall Replay Radio and
then install ActiveSync. Then you can reinstall Replay Radio.
- If you see a long pause or a failure at 91% while installing
ActiveSync, look in the c:\windows\inf\
folder for OEMx.INF/OEMx.PNF (where x is any number) files that are zero
bytes long. Delete all zero byte OEMx.INF/OEMx.PNF files in the
folder. If any files are read only change the attribute and delete them.
Reboot and then try reinstalling ActiveSync. One possible source for
this problem is Norton Utilities. I have reported this issue with
ActiveSync 3.5 on Windows ME on a Casio Fiva MPC-206e where I had to plug
the notebook into the wall after deleting the files. Other
users have seen it on ActiveSync 3.7 on Windows XP.
- If you have an HP All-in-One 1210xi printer you will not be able to
install ActiveSync. The process hpoevm08.exe interferes with the
installation because it never ends. Use the Task Manager to kill the
task. Then complete the installation of ActiveSync. To print,
reboot the PC. This problem affects all versions of ActiveSync 3.x
- If you see an error message saying that you have more than one program
directory with the word Microsoft (ie: c:\program files\microsoft) in it,
see Microsoft Article
216621 for details. Here's the message you may see "Activesync
cannot log on to Microsoft Outlook. Make sure MS Outlook is installed and
functioning correctly. You may need to restart your computer. You could
have a conflict due to two folders on this computer are named C:\Program
Files\Microsoft and C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Office. If so,
rename.......".
Initial
Configuration:
-
If you are unable to connect then try soft resetting
your Pocket PC, Handheld PC or Palm-size PC.
-
If you are unable to connect your Pocket PC, Handheld
PC, or Palm-size PC to your desktop, you may need to reinstall
ActiveSync.
-
If you are using Windows NT or Windows 2000 using the
Serial port and cannot connect. try this patch from
HP which forces ActiveSync to use Com1 and allows you to change the
port setting without connecting first. This patch works with all
versions of ActiveSync 3.x.
-
If you can't connect via a network connection
(Ethernet, RAS or 802.11b (Wi-Fi)) then try
Pocket Hosts
to enter your desktop's IP address into the Pocket PC, or Handheld PC
2000.
-
If you are trying to connect using Bluetooth with your
Pocket PC, make sure you have configured the Bluetooth driver on your PC
to support the Bluetooth serial profile. The serial port listed in
the Bluetooth driver must be selected in ActiveSync to synchronize with
your Pocket PC. Also, if you are using the iPAQ 3870/3875/3970/3975
then you need to limit the speed of the Bluetooth connection on your PC to
115.2k baud. ActiveSync only supports virtual com ports 0 through 9
so if your driver installs a com port that is higher, you need to
re-assign it to a lower port number to select it. Note: The
Windows XP Bluetooth drivers do not support the Bluetooth Serial profile.
You must install the Bluetooth drivers from your Bluetooth Manufacturer in
order to sync.
-
If you are unable to connect after a new installation
using Windows NT, 2000 or XP, did you install ActiveSync using the
Administrator account? If you did not then, uninstall ActiveSync and
login as the Administrator and install it again.
-
If you see "Microsoft exchange--There are no profiles.
Choose the Mail and Fax icon in the Control Panel to create a new
profile." you need to install Outlook or setup a profile to sync.
This will occur if you have freshly installed Outlook and not opened it as
well. If you do not have Outlook, and want to use Outlook
Express consider SyncData.
- If you are attempting to use a USB to serial adapter, you may not be
able to sync. Some USB to serial adapters are not supported with
ActiveSync. An example of a USB adapter that does not work is the
Targus Mobile Port Replicator - PA070U. See Microsoft KB article
245687.
- If you see an error when you reboot from ActiveSync and it says that
the Infrared or COM port you have selected is unavailable and you can
select and use that port after you boot. Modifying the registry is not
supported by Microsoft so do this at your own risk!
- If you want to choose another folder to sync on the PC other than
Pocket_PC My Documents, modify the registry key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows
CE Services\Partners\73491db6\Services\Synchronization where the partner
id 73491db6 is always different for each partnership. Microsoft does
not support modifying the registry so do this at your own risk!
Open REGEDIT on the PC and confirm that there is a value for the key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows CE Services\SerialPort which
refers to the port you want to use. Thenrename the key
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows CE Services\SerialPort to
another name. Reboot and confirm that ActiveSync works correctly.
USB Issues
- If you install ActiveSync 3.6 on a new PC, you may not be able to sync
and the system will ask you for USB drivers for your Pocket PC. I
suggest installing ActiveSync 3.5 first and then installing ActiveSync 3.6
to resolve this issue.
- If you are having problems with USB connections get the driver from
the OEM if it is available. Dell and Toshiba have a special USB
driver that needs to be installed on the PC. The USB driver is
included on the OEM cdrom provided or from their websites.
- If you are unable to connect with USB, try looking in the Device
Manager for an unknown device. If there is one when the Pocket PC is
plugged in, then delete the device. Then reboot and try to connect again.
An unknown device will be installed if you plugged your Pocket PC in
before installing ActiveSync.
- If you are unable to connect with USB, try plugging the Pocket PC into
any other USB ports. Some PCs now have both USB 1.1 and 2.0 ports.
Generally the Pocket PC works better with USB 1.1 ports.
- If you are unable to connect with USB, make sure that you have the
latest rom bios installed on your PC. An example of this issue with recent
bios include the Dell Dimension 8200 with bios version A07 dated 7-19-02
which would not work until it was upgrade to version A09.
- If you are having problems with USB connections, consider upgrading
the Pocket PC's rom if it is available. I recommend only attempting
the rom upgrade on a PC where the USB sync is stable for at least 15
minutes so you will need to find another PC to sync with.
-
Some users have reported that the use of an externally
powered USB hub has allowed them to synchronize. (This has been reported
to work for the Dell Axim). Other users have reported some problems
with using a USB hub. I suggest trying to connect both ways.
-
Other users have reported that their synchronization
problems with the Toshiba Pocket PCs are diminished after they installed a
newer USB 2.0 card from Belkin with 4 USB ports.
- If you are using the Dell Advanced Port Replicator (APR), plug the
Pocket PC's USB cable directly to the Dell laptop instead. You may
see like "WCESMgr.exe - Application Error The instruction at 0x77235468
referenced memory at 0x00003000. The memory could not be read." if you
attempt to sync using the APR.
Guest Issues
-
If you connect as GUEST and you have rename your Pocket
PC, you need to perform a soft reset for the new name to take effect.
See Microsoft Article
Q259954 for details.
-
If you connect as GUEST to your Pocket PC and you are
using ActiveSync 3.5, you may need to issue the command
"\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\REGSVR32 MSXML3.DLL" or "\WINNT\SYSTEM32\REGSVR32
MSXML3.DLL" Do not type the quotes with the command. This
re-registers the DLL with Windows.
-
If you connect as GUEST, then click the start button
and select the “run” option and type “syncmgr /quit”. Then turn off your
Pocket PC and turn it on again.
-
If you are connecting as GUEST, try reinstalling
Internet Explorer 6 (except XP users). This has fixed the GUEST
synchronization problem for other users. For Windows XP users you
can repair Internet Explorer by following
Microsoft's KB Article 318378.
-
If you are connecting as GUEST with Windows 2000?
You need to have read-write access to the ActiveSync program folder and
subfolder to create a partnership. See
Microsoft's KB Article 259875.
-
Intermittent guest connections if the user has
Synchrologic mail syncing program is installed on their Pocket PC with
less than 64MB of ram. Contact Synchrologic for an update.
Firewall and Proxy
Issues
-
If you are using the Microsoft Proxy server and the
Winsock proxy, you may need to create a local address table for your
connection to your PC Companion. This is done by creating a text file in
the \mspclnt directory called locallat.txt. You need to enter the
following into the file 192.168.55.100 192.168.55.101 Once this is saved,
you can then use ActiveSync. You also need to edit your mspclnt.ini
on the server and add:
[dccman]
disable=3D1
[rnaapp]
disable=3D1
This is required to disable the use of the Socks for ActiveSync on the
server. It will take approximately 24 hours for these settings to be
sent to the desktop.
A workaround for configuring the desktop alone is to
disable Winsock use in the directory by creating a wspcfg.ini file in the
C:\Program Files\Windows CE Services directory with the following two
lines:
[common configuration]
disable=1
You must also disable Winsock for rnaapp.exe which is in the
c:\windows\system directory by creating another wspcfg.ini file in the
C::\Windows\System directory with the following two lines:
[rnaapp]
disable=1
-
If you are using a firewall in between your desktop and
your Pocket PC, Handheld PC, or Palm-size PC, you must allow for Netbios
and port 990, 999 and 5679 to use ActiveSync. For a complete list of
the ports, please review my Protocols
FAQ. I do not recommend opening these ports due to the
additional security risk.
-
If you have Zone Alarm installed you will not be able
to use File - Explore, synchronize files or Add/Remove Programs. Disabling
Zone Alarm does not stop the True Vector Engine so access will be blocked.
After you uninstall Zone Alarm, the Pocket PC will sync fine.
-
If you have Norton Internet Security then you need to
configure NIS to allow ActiveSync to use TCP/IP. See
Configuring Norton Internet Security and
ActiveSync.
Synchronization
Errors:
-
If you get an error beginning with 80XXXXXX (where
XXXXXX is any hexadecimal number) you have a corrupted record in Outlook.
See ActiveSync - Identifying Unresolved
Items to assist you with fixing this issue.
-
If you get a 628 error while connecting your Pocket PC,
Handheld PC, or Palm-size PC to your Windows NT desktop, you need to use
the guest account to sign in instead of the user you used.
-
If you run the Aventail 3.21 VPN client then you need
to make the following changes to avoid hanging in ActiveSync whenever you
remove your Pocket PC from the USB cradle:.
Run the Aventail config tool. Select the "Advanced" tab. Check "Secure
all applications except listed" check box in the "Applications to Secure"
group box. Click "Modify List". Add "wcescomm.exe" and "WCESMgr.exe"
located in the ActiveSync program directory. Most likely "C:\Program
Files\Microsoft ActiveSync". Click "OK" then "File -> Save" and then
reboot.
-
If you are using the HummingBird's SOCKS client, you
must add a direct statement in your SOCKS.CNF file in order to allow the
addresses used by the Pocket PC, Handheld PC, or Palm-size PC's serial
connection to connect to your PC instead of sending them to the SOCKS
server:
DIRECT 192.168.55.0 255.255.255.0
-
If you install ActiveSync 3.5 or later with Outlook 97
(unsupported), you can synchronize your calendar, contacts and tasks.
Synchronizing Inbox does not work in this configuration.
-
If you are connecting via the serial port with your
Pocket PC, Handheld PC or Palm-size PC, and you are having errors
synchronizing, consider reducing the baud rate from 115.2k to 19,200 or
9,600 on your device. ActiveSync will adjust to the correct
baud rate. I have found that this is especially true for Handheld PC
2.0 and Palm-size PC 1.0 devices.
-
If you are having problems with staying connected via
USB, make sure you install the latest BIOS updates for your motherboard.
Also, install the latest updates for USB for your motherboard. See
USB Man for updates. I
also suggest plugging the Pocket PC directly into your PC instead of using
a USB hub. Some users have reported that they can synchronize if
they unplug all other USB devices.
- If ActiveSync gets stuck, you can end the program using the Task
Manager and end the tasks WCESCOMM and WCESMGR. To restart
ActiveSync, just click on the ActiveSync icon on your desktop. You can use
the free utilities KILLSYNC to
end the tasks or RESYNC to end the
tasks and restart ActiveSync.
-
If you see the error "Synchronization cannot be started
because you are not able to log onto the network and access information.
Restart your desktop computer and synchronize again. If the problem
persists, contact your network administrator. " in Outlook 2000. You
will need to reconfigure Outlook. See Microsoft Article
Q243029 for details.
-
If you see the error "Microsoft Outlook Synchronization
ActiveSync cannot log on to Microsoft Outlook. Make sure Microsoft Outlook
is installed and functioning correctly. You may need to restart your
computer." in Outlook 2002. You will need to reconfigure Outlook.
See Microsoft Article
Q324864 for details.
-
If you see the error "Microsoft Outlook Synchronization
- Synchronization could not start because this desktop computer could not
access necessary information. Restart this desktop computer and
synchronize again. If this persists reopen Outlook, click on help then run
detect and repair. Synchronization cannot start because you cannot log on
to the network, and access information, restart your desktop and synch
again. If problems persist, contact your network administrator." in
Outlook 2000. You need to reconfigure Outlook. See Microsoft Article
Q276563 for details.
- When synchronizing via the network or RAS the Pocket PC automatically
disconnects when done. If you want to stay connected when
synchronizing via a network or RAS then on your Pocket PC click Start -
ActiveSync and select Tools - Options from the menu select the Schedule
tab. Uncheck the box labeled "When synchronizing remotely with my
PC, disconnect when complete". This option just affects PC
synchronization.
- If you see the following error in Windows 2000 or Windows XP:
WCESCOMM.EXE - Error in application
The application couldn't be initialized correctly (0xc0000142)
a. See
Elron Software's fix for this.
b, If you have Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition version 8.0.x upgrade
to 8.1.x.
- Your PC attempts to connect to the internet whenever you synchronize.
This is caused by ActiveSync attempting to start internet passthrough.
You can disable this by launching ActiveSync, clicking on File -
Connection Settings. Uncheck the option "Allow Network and RAS..."
Also if you have an Inbox POP3 or IMAP4 account on your Pocket PC 2002,
select the ActiveSync profile. This will prevent your Pocket PC from
using the PC for internet pass through to access e-mail.
- If you see "AppName: outlook.exe AppVer: 9.0.0.2416 ModName:
mso9.dll ModVer: 9.0.0.3821" then you have the Personal Folders Backup
installed. Personal Folders Backup is not compatible with ActiveSync
so you must uninstall it. See Microsoft Article
Q324864 for details.
- If you keep seeing the Add/Remove Programs window this is because a
desktop installation has not been completed to your Pocket PC. If
you want to eliminate this, you need to uninstall the last program you
installed from the list of installed applications. There may be more
than one application that has to be uninstalled if you do not recall when
this started to occur.
- If Inbox does not sync and you are using Hotmail, you cannot sync
e-mail. See
Handango for a list of applications that sync Hotmail.
- If you installed ActiveSync 3.5/3.6 and then upgraded your desktop OS
to Windows XP, you may not be able to synchronize. You need to check and
see if ActiveSync is running in compatibility mode by right clicking on
the program or shortcut. If it is, then remove these settings and
you should be able to sync.
- If you are unable to sync and you have installed McAfee and are
getting "unresolved items" where you are synchronizing or receive
"network error", disable the HAWK e-mail option.
- If you see a message "There was no response from your mobile device
while checking for out-of-date appointments" and you have Resco Picture
Viewer (the Axim has this in ROM), delete the file picViewSync.dat in the
\Windows directory on your Pocket PC. Then you should be able to
sync again.
- Unable to sync Inbox? Did you restore on your Pocket PC 2002?
If so then you need to delete the Inbox accounts, sync and then set them
back up.
- Does your PC hang when you sync? Do you have a USB Logitech
Cordless Mouseman Wheel part # M-RL53 plugged in (drivers mw976enu and
mw975wnu)? If so you have a hardware conflict with the mouse and the
Pocket PC. I suggest considering another mouse instead.
- If you see "Attention Required" and you are using Windows 98, Outlook
2000 and see "Error Number:0x80070725 Description: Incompatible version of
the RPC stub" when attempting to uninstall an application you have a
problem with a corrupted DLL such as OLEAUT32.dll, Olepro32.dll,
Asycfilt.dll, Stdole2.tlb. file. See
InstallShield's KB article. This issue is related to installing
the wrong operating system/ version of DLLs for DCOM.
- If you have McAfee Virusscan or McAfee Clinic installed with the
Privacy Service and you cannot sync, try uninstalling ActiveSync and then
the Privacy service. Then reinstall ActiveSync and then the Privacy
service according to McAfee support.
- If you see the error "A synchronization partnership cannot be created
because the source database name is too long. Choose OK to copy the
database without synchronizing it or choose Cancel to end this operation,
rename your source database, and try again later." then you need to login
as an Administrator to synchronize the Access database.
- If you are unable to synchronize with Outlook, I suggest that you use
Outlook's Detect and Repair option. Before beginning, you will need
your Outlook CD to complete the Detect and Repair. To begin, open
Outlook and click on Help - Detect and Repair.
- If you are unable to sync using Wi-Fi or Ethernet it could be because
you have an open connection to a server on your network. If you are
using Windows Media Player, File Explorer or other 3rd party network share
application, ActiveSync will attempt to connect using that connection and
fail. You need to disconnect from network connections to sync.
- You cannot sync database files because the option to select the
database files is no longer displayed in ActiveSync - Tools - Options.
1. Perform a full backup of the Pocket PC so you can restore in the event
of a failure 2. Remove the Pocket PC from the cradle/cable and select File
- Delete Partnership on ActiveSync on the PC. 3. Perform a Detect and
Repair on Outlook using the menu item Help - Detect and Repair 4. Reboot
your PC 5. Hard reset your Pocket PC 6. Once the reboots/resets are
complete, reconnect your Pocket PC to your PC and setup a partnership.
- If you see "Cannot start communications with the desktop computer.
Winsock services could not start due to critical error 10054" then try
soft resetting your Pocket PC. Then attempt to sync.
- If you are unable to sync Inbox and you have install Mozilla, Mozilla
replaces the MAPI.DLL with a 6k file. To fix this problem, Close
Outlook then Search for and find all copies of MAPI32.DLL and delete or
rename them. Start Outlook and answer YES to the "fix" question.
Mozilla is compatible with the Outlook version of MAPI32.DLL which is
about 150k.
- If you are synchronizing with a PC that uses Exchange, you may see an
error like "ActiveSync Error: The following task cannot be written to
Microsoft Outlook due to error 870070057. The item will be skipped. Task
<subject of task here> Ok, Skip, Cancel" You can sync if you
change Exchange Server, Tools - Task View and check "Save Task Order".
(Use Simple List if that item is greyed out with your current view.) It
will take a minute or three, and after that, synching returns to normal.
- If you see the error message "Unable to open your default e-mail
folders. The .DLL file for the information service could not be found.
MAPI was unable to load the information service Pstprx.dll. Be sure the
service is correctly installed and configured." then install the latest
Office XP Service Pack or follow the work around at
Microsoft article 293058.
MIS - Mobile Information
Server
- If you see an INTERNET_15 error it means you were unable to logon.
Usually this is caused by a proxy server if you try and sync via your
desktop. You need to set the Pocket PC to use Work where it will use
the proxy settings from the desktop.
- If you see the error INTERNET_29 this is related to accessing
MIS. See
Microsoft Knowledge Base article 318883.
- There is a synchronization limit of 373 top level folders that can be
synchronized with MIS with Pocket PC 2002. Windows Mobile 2003 does
not have this limit. You may see errors like "CONNMGR_36 (E_CONNMGR_NOPATHTODESTINATION):
Unable to connect. Verify your dialup or proxy settings are correct, and
try again.)" or "INTERNET_29 (Synchronization failed. Information cannot
be synchronized because a connection to the network was not detected.
Check your device connection settings and try again.Error code:
INTERNET_29) and DEV_9 (E_FAIL_CONN_INFO_ABSENT): Required connection
information not present.)." Restructure your folders to place them
in a subfolder to avoid this problem.
- If you do not have any certificate on the website and are using a
SmartPhone you may see the error INTERNET_29 (something about check
connectivity.... presumably this means the server is not listening on
HTTPS: port 443) So you definitely do need a certificate of some type
applied to the exchange web site, to open up port 443, and unless it's a
trusted root certificate you will also have to run certchk.exe OFF or
install the AS_Cert_Off.cab on the SmartPhone.
- If you see "Synchronization failed due to a communications failure.
Error Code: INTERNET_31" try changing your Connection Manager settings to
Work on the Pocket PC. The setting of Work is required to sync to
MIS. Also, if you have changed the address of the MIS then you need to
soft reset the Pocket PC to delete the host entry.
- If you see an error INTERNET_45 which means that the
"security certificate on the server is invalid" it may be because you are
using a self generated certificate instead of one that is issued by a
trusted authority like Verisign. (The Pocket PC was checking to make
sure that the certificate was official). To sync with the self
generated certificate, Run CERTCHK.EXE off or install
the AS_Cert_Off.cab on the Pocket PC, and then you should connect fine.
- If you see the error INTERNET_55 then try installing the digital
certificate required to sync. See Microsoft KB article
322956 for Pocket PC 2002. For Windows Mobile 2003, just copy
the certificate to the Pocket PC and click on it to install it.
Microsoft allows Windows Mobile 2003 devices to select whether or not to
sync without a certificate however Pocket PC 2002 do not have this option.
- If you see "Synchronization failed due to a communications failure.
Try again. INTERNET_152 " then try the information listed in Microsoft KB
article
318376.
- To reset the MIS ActiveSync state on your Pocket PC, you can force a
purge by performing the following steps:
1. In the ActiveSync application on the Pocket PC, click on
Tools->Options->Server Tab
2. Then uncheck all items (calendar, contacts, and inbox) and click ok
3. This will "purge" your Pocket PC of all items. Any items on the server
will remain, but adds/changes you've made on the device since your last
sync will be lost.
4. Then Recheck the types you want to sync and click ok.
Your Pocket PC is now "reset", and the next synchronization will copy all
the data down from the server again.
- If you setup your Pocket PC to sync to MIS, you may see the following
message "Synchronization failed. If the problem continues, contact your
network administrator. Error code: 0x80070008" This occurs due to a
memory leak based on the number of times you check your server. If you
perform a soft reset it will allow you to continue to use your Pocket PC.
- If you see an error 1720 when you try to install MIS on Windows Server
2003, it is because MIS is not supported on Windows Server 2003.
Microsoft recommends that you upgrade to Exchange 2003 which includes the
functionality of MIS and it runs fine on Windows Server 2003.
For additional troubleshooting of MIS, visit Microsoft's article entitled
"HOW TO:
Troubleshoot Server ActiveSync"
Missing or Duplicate Calendar, Contacts, Tasks or Notes:
-
If you see the Resolve Items listed on the ActiveSync
program's display, then close all applications and click on the link.
If this does not work, then try soft resetting your Pocket PC and
re-synchronize. See ActiveSync -
Identifying Unresolved Items to assist you with fixing this issue.
-
If you are having problems with missing appointments,
make sure that you have set ActiveSync to send all appointments. The
default is 2 weeks. This is done while the Pocket PC, Handheld PC or
Palm-size PC is connected from the menu item Tools -> ActiveSync Options
-> Appointments -> Options.
-
If you are having problems with missing tasks make sure
that you have set ActiveSync to send all tasks. The default is incomplete
tasks. This is done while the Pocket PC, Handheld PC or Palm-size PC is
connected from the menu item Tools -> ActiveSync Options -> Tasks ->
Options.
-
If you are missing Notes then you may have a corrupted
PST file. See Microsoft's KB article
Q30554 which explains how to create a new one.
-
You can choose specific categories of Contacts or
Appointments to synchronize. This is done one the Pocket PC, Handheld PC
or Palm-size PC is connected from the menu item Tools -> ActiveSync
Options -> Tasks or Appointments -> Options.
-
If you have duplicate contacts, you can use the
Outlook
Duplicate Remover (free) or
LBE Toolbox for
Outlook. Usually duplicate contacts occur if you are asked to
synchronize and you select the option to merge data. This approach
is best since you will not lose any data you entered on your Pocket PC,
you may end up with duplicate items in Outlook.
-
In ActiveSync 3.1, if you enter the notes on the Pocket
PC, Handheld PC or Palm-size PC and then sync, the notes can be modified
on the desktop and they will stay synchronized. If you enter the notes on
the desktop first, then they will not.
-
If you are upgrading from Schedule + or Outlook
97/98/2000/XP you need to reinstall ActiveSync. Also, you may need to
delete your old partnership with your Pocket PC, Handheld PC or Palm-size
PC. This is done from Mobile Services, click on the device name and then
select File, Delete. When the new partnership is created, don't forget to
select Outlook for all synchronization.
-
If you are having problems synchronizing with Outlook
you may want to run Scanpst.exe from the \Program Files\Windows Messaging
folder. This will fix a corrupt Outlook personal folder (.PST file).
-
For some problems, deleting the partnership in
ActiveSync on your desktop and creating a new partnership resolves some
problems. This includes AvantGo channel synchronization as well.
-
If you see that your appointments on your Pocket PC are
1 hour off from your PC, you need to make sure that the timezone and
daylight savings time settings are the same. This occurs because all
appointments on the Pocket PC and PC are stored based on the offset from
GMT.
