Introduction

Here is a blow by blow view of the installation of the Pocket PC 2002 Service Pack 3 (EUU3).  Service Pack 3 includes all the updates from Service Pack 1and 2 so you can install Service Pack 3 instead of Service Pack 1 or 2 and get all the updates.  I recommend that you plan for this upgrade to take approximately 20 minutes to complete.  Also there is no option to uninstall this service pack once you install it!

Preparing to Install

I would suggest the following things be performed before installing the EUU3 update:

1. Synchronize with your desktop.  That way your desktop has all the latest updates from your calendar, contacts and tasks.

2. Perform a backup using ActiveSync.  Start to synchronize and click Tools - Backup / Restore.  Then follow the menus to complete the backup

3. Uninstall Windows Media Player 8.0 if you have a 32 MB rom.  EUU3 includes Windows Media Player 8.5 in rom for 32 MB rom.

4. If you have a power on password, remove it.

5. Free 12 MB of ram and place the .CAB file on a flash card or free 24 MB of ram and place the .CAB file in ram.  You can delete documents, videos or audio files as well as remove programs to free ram to complete the installation. It does not matter if the ram is storage or execution just so long as it's free since the Pocket PC will adjust the slider based on what is required. 

6. Plug your Pocket PC 2002 into the AC Adapter

7. Disconnect your Pocket PC from synchronizing with your PC.  You can do this by viewing the Today page and clicking on the network connection in the lower hand corner.  Then click the Disconnect button to disconnect.

Installation

Make sure you have the Pocket PC running on AC power before attempting to install EUU3.  During the update your Pocket PC 2002 will reboot twice.  You should not lose any of your data during the installation of EUU3. Do not reset your Pocket PC during the installation.  If you perform a reset you may corrupt your Pocket PC's rom or data.

So once the .CAB file has been copied to your Pocket PC you need to click on it to install it.

Once the installation is complete, you will see this screen:

The installation process takes approximately 15 minutes and your Pocket PC will look like this the whole time:

Then your Pocket PC will reboot and you can use it. All your data should still be on the Pocket PC.  Once your Pocket PC EUU3 install is complete, I suggest performing a backup using ActiveSync - Tools - Backup/Restore.  If you have a problem, I do not recommend attempting a restore of a backup from an older version of the Pocket PC OS.

Reinstalling

If you click the cancel button while you were installing EUU3 and attempt to reinstall it, you will see the following message:

Once you select OK, you may see this screen if the prior installation was not completed:

Once the installation is complete on the Pocket PC, you will see the screen

and the installation will complete like I documented above.
